Twenty three live tracks from the '98 Chicago Metro shows became available on MusicMaker
in early June, to download or order custom CD(s). All the tracks from the "Music for
Hangovers" CD are available there too and the website URL is
http://www.musicmaker.com . I understand that further live tracks (from the Rockford 25th
Anniversary Show) will be made available at a later date.
The first limited edition "Bun E's Basement Bootleg" rarities CD' #1 was offered
to Trick International members late in May, and some copies (of the 1,000 disk run) are
now available to the public (at the time of writing, 13 July). The order form can be found
on the official www.cheaptrick.com website (follow the link on the "News" page).
For those receiving this newsletter on paper, I have enclosed a copy of the order form.
Hurry to order, no further copies will be pressed after they sell out. The disk features
12 rare live tracks, including performances with various well known musicians, and many of
the tracks were recorded at shows in the UK. Recommended.
The re-mastered "Authorised Greatest Hits" CD is due for release on the Sony
label, in both the USA and (I understand) the UK, around late August. The 16 track
compilation has not only been re-mastered but also re-compiled, and I understand the
likely track listing to be:-
I Want You to Want Me, Ain't That a Shame, Southern Girls, Surrender, Stop This Game,
Dream Police, If You Want My Love (alternate version), Tonight It's You, Everything Works
If You Let It, Mandocello, I Can't Take It (live 98), She's Tight, That 70's Song (In The
Street), Walk Away, Can't Stop Falling Into Love, The Flame (live 88).
The DVD of the Rockford 25th Anniversary Show is apparently due for US release late in
August. The whole two hour plus show will be included, and it's fitting that its planned
release is almost a year to the day of the show. No news of this being available in
European format though. I understand that negotiations are ongoing as to a distribution
deal for the the long awaited DVD/video of the 1998 Chicago Metro (Music for Hangovers)
shows. Again, it is likely to only be released in the US initially, and I'm not aware of
any plans for Europe at this stage.
Cheap Trick have been voted as being in the top 25 "greatest hard rock artists"
in a poll conducted amongst the music industry by VH-1 (USA). As such they will feature in
one of 5 one hour long programmes to be aired in the US in November 2000. The working
title for the series is "100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists". I'll try to find out
if this series might also air on VH-1 in Europe and let you know.
The third "Alt.Music.Cheap-Trick newsgroup" fan tribute CD is available for
order from 12 July and features 19 tracks from amateur musicians/bands ranging from the
USA and Japan to Sweden and Scotland. I was lucky enough to hear all the songs whilst I
was in LA and ithis collection is as impressive as the first two. This is a non-profit
venture, so the charge is purely to cover costs. The order form can be found online at
www.studio411.net (as can the sleeve design and track listing) and for those not online,
you can order by mail (order form enclosed) from Studio 411, attn: Mark Brainard, 22647
Ventura Blvd. #574, Woodland Hills, CA 91364, USA (money order payable to "Mark
Brainard"). The cost for one CD, including mailing to Europe or Japan is US$10. For
costs to ship elsewhere in the world or to order multiple copies, contact Mark at the
address above or by e-mail at mabwon@aol.com. Again, recommended.
Though this is meant to be an impartial newsletter, less recommended is the "Cheap
Dream" "tribute" CD that was commercially released in the USA in May. Try
to listen to the CD if possible before ordering, the electronic backing to many of the
tracks do make them extremely different to the original versions by Cheap Trick. Import
copies of this CD can be found or ordered from places like Virgin, and online through such
suppliers as www.cdnow.com or www.amazon.com. Samples can be heard online at some of the
suppliers websites.
Two brief items: The "Heart - Greatest Hits 85-95" CD has been released in
Europe and the USA, and includes the Robin Zander/Ann Wilson duet "Surrender to
Me". Belgian fan Walter De Coninck is still looking to make contact with other fans.
If interested, please write to him at Veldstraat 134, 2930 Brassschaat, Belgium.
